Rip Curl is a large, private surfing lifestyle company and brand based in Australia. They got their start in 1969 producing surfboards gradually expanding into wetsuits and eventually getting into clothing and accessories that included watches.
The main selling point of Rip Curl watches is their embodiment of surfing culture. These guys know surfing and have distilled that into durable and cool watch designs that know tides and are designed to hold up in the roughest of waters.
To prove their dedication to surfing one must simply refer to the long time track record of ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) world event sponsorship. Not to mention their continuous sponsorship of many of the top surfing athletes.
These watches come in two distinct flavors, one (their specialty), is surf watches. They are intended to constantly be in the water, can track tides for you and are made to withstand quite a beating. You don’t want to overdo it with these watches as they can still chip and scratch but you can expect 100% satisfaction when it comes to its water resistance.
The second flavor is lifestyle watches. These are also intended to withstand water relatively well but are mainly focused on a casual, semi-classy, laid back style that is great when you head out to that bon fire on the beach after a long day of surfing. Its not recommended to actually surf with these pieces as there is a greater risk of damaging them but feel free to jump in the ocean for a swim with these on.
They are primarily a mens watch focused company but do have some offerings available for women in both their surfing and lifestyle categories.
A bonus of these watches is that they are from a brand that cares and make their customer service readily available if you ever have any issues.
They also use higher quality mechanical movements (versus cheap quartz movements) many of their lifestyle watches which really gives you a more valuable watch than most designer and large brand pieces which are primarily quartz based. While quartz is a cheaper movement, it is also a much more practical mechanism for their surf watches which need to be able to withstand quite a beating.
